Objectives

Students are expected to have achieved the following objectives:

  • Students will be able to understand and describe the key elements of the Malliaros Carnival.
  • Students will be able to identify the connection between tradition, legend, and modern values in the carnival.
  • Students will be able to discuss the themes of inclusion and acceptance in the context of the Malliaros legend.
  • Students will be able to practice their speaking and listening skills in English.

Student knowledge

As part of Greek literature and local history, the students have already Know about the Characteristics of Rural Carnivals.

Description

Teaching Process:

 Introduction to the Malliaros Carnival (10 minutes):

  • Show a map of Greece and point out the Peloponnese region, Messini, and Magganiako.
  • Briefly explain that today they will learn about a special carnival that happens in a small village in that region.
  • Present the concept of the Malliaros Carnival to the students.
  • Use VR headset  to illustrate the key elements: 
  • Disguised bell-ringers dancing in the village alleys.
  • The tradition of fire.
  • The legend of Malliaros.
  • Explain the legend of Malliaros, focusing on the story of his abandonment and eventual inclusion.
  • Provide key vocabulary: illegitimate, hairy, abandon, cradle, legend, inclusion, acceptance, Dionysian.

Discussion and Analysis (15 minutes):

  • Distribute the handout with discussion questions.
  • Lead a class discussion, focusing on the following points: 
    • How does the modern celebration differ from the original legend?
    • What do you think is the significance of calling Malliaros out of his cradle and inviting him to dance?
    • How does the Malliaros Carnival reflect the values of inclusion and acceptance?
    • Why do you think it is important for the village to keep this tradition alive?
    • What are the dionysian elements of this carnival?
  • Encourage students to share their opinions and interpretations.
  • Facilitate a respectful and open discussion.

Closing (5 minutes):

Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about the Malliaros Carnival and its significance.
