An Introduction to Immersive Learning as a Pedagogical Approach

This paper introduces Immersive Learning as a pedagogical approach that goes beyond the use of technology, placing emphasis on experiential and student-centred learning. Drawing on current research, it highlights how immersive learning environments foster active participation, emotional and cognitive engagement, and reflective learning processes.

Particular attention is given to the role of immersive learning in supporting critical thinking, collaboration, and intercultural understanding, aligning closely with the objectives of the WILOS360 – Witness Local Customs in 360 project. The paper provides a theoretical foundation for the educational use of Immersive Reality technologies (VR, AR, and 360° content), supporting the design of meaningful learning experiences that connect education with cultural heritage and local customs.
